1. Questions about Keyshells

1.1 How do I choose the right keyshell?

The blade (the metal part that is inserted into the lock) should be the same as you have now. If the shell does not have the right blade, you will not be able to use it. The printed circuit board of your remote control should also fit into the new shell. Click the picture for a larger version.

1.2 How do I transfer the electronics?

This differs from one shell to another. You need to transfer the circuit board and the transponderchip. Sometimes the transponderchip is integrated in the circuit board. With the flipkeys from Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Seat the transponderchip is in the bottom part (called the horseshoe).

1.3 What is a transponderchip?

It is an electronic chip in the keyhead. When you turn the key in the ignition lock the code in the transponderchip is read out wirelessly. Only when the code is correct will the car start. The casing of the chip is either plastic or glass. Cars produced before 1996 usually do not use a transponderchip.

1.4 Are the shells interchangeable?

The shells have the correct dimensions to contain your circuit board and your chip. The blade will also fit into your lock correctly. Parts of the new shell are not always interchangeable with your current shell. For example, if a shell has a front- and backside then the new front may not fit the back of your current shell.

1.5 Are the keyshells original?

Keyshells are an after-market product, so they are not original. The shells have been developed to correctly replace original shells. After-market does not mean that the quality is less. Sometimes the quality is even higher than the original. Our main supplier also produces OEM keys (original keys) for the car industry. If you want to have an original carkey you need to buy from a dealer. However, they only sell complete keys for a correspondingly higher price.

1.6 How can I have the new key cut?

Sometimes it is possible to insert the existing blade into the new shell. If the shell consists out top and bottom part, it may be possible to replace the top part only. You can have the blade cut by a local key shop. Common cylinderkeys can be duplicated by any key service shop. To have a laserkey, a tibbe or simplex key duplicated you can refer to a specialist. These keys require special key machines. Also read the question "You cut the key for free?" further down this page.
